My cousin, Allen Wilson, took a minute this evening to update me on some of the things he's been up to lately. It was an impressive list. As we were talking, it really started sinking in just how much he's contributed to the success of our bread company.
Allen, my dad's sister's son, is an electrician by trade, and he's been responsible for a mindboggling list of large and small projects to get us going and keep us going at our new location.
As we were making our monumental move from NE Portland to Milwaukie, and for the months leading up to it, he excelled as project supervisor, getting many others to do what needed to be done. And along the way, I figure he probably did as much or more with his own hands as anyone he was supervising. Not just electical, mind you. The guy is phenomenal at finding solutions to problems of all sorts. He is a designer of innovative solutions. I believe he is passionate about what we are up to and about his contribution.
He is also a devoted father to some really amazing and talented kids: David, 26, is a resident surgeon at the University of Michigan. John, 22, is in Nashville doing research on MRSA (really nasty staph infection) and studying to be a pediatrician. And Andrew, 21, is going to be a teacher. His wife, Patty, is a flight attendant. He's always excited when he gets to see her, because she's in the air more than he'd prefer, I'm sure.
Allen is the biggest goofball I've ever known. Quite creative with the practical jokes. He's a 50-something year old juvenile delinquent with a conscience.
Next to my mother, he's the closest thing to a saint that I've ever known. Sure, he's my cousin, so you might think I'm blowing smoke up his [insert inappropriate word]. What he does will probably never make it on the evening news, but he is a hero to me. I just had to tell you.
