as if my (killer bread) head wasn't big enough already...

I do my best to stay humble by remembering where I have been, and how easy if would be for me to end up again in such straits. I have not been without mistakes in this regard, however. It is easy to blame others for my behavior when I start to slip, but that is the worst thing I can do. Whenever I don't have the power to get people to do what I believe they should do, I must accept it and move on. The serenity prayer (AA) is "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Therein lies great strength, for me.

Practicing humility doesn't mean you're always going to get it right. But when you do, even bad days end up being good.

I truly believe that this has been the secret to my success for the past several years. May I always remember this.

That said, I get a lot of love from people about my bread. Here are some recent examples:

Here is an article in Crosscut by Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett.

And, just today, on Roadfood.com, a review of Dave's Killer Bread. For more examples of love from the press, as well as videos and an ever-growing list of DKB outlets, click here.

And now, some examples of emails I have received from folks recently:

Last week I was collecting communion elements for a Theological Reflection Group retreat in southwest Oregon. Our theme for this retreat was Mission, so I wanted something a little different and meaningful. I knew where to get some wine from the Middle East, and I knew that Dave’s Killer Bread would be especially meaningful. Of course I knew this bread was available only in pre-sliced loaves but I wondered, as I headed for the bread rack at New Seasons, wouldn’t it be great if Dave came out with an unsliced loaf? I went to the display and there it was! Dave’s new baguette – unsliced and the perfect size for a small group communion. So I picked up a loaf, then went back and picked up another so we could have it at home, also.

After our communion, nearly everyone asked me where they could get some more of this delicious bread and important bread. I steered them to New Seasons and Fred Meyers.

I want to send 4 loaves to Arizona, but would like one of my selections to be the no-flour bread. Is this possible? Your bread just has to be the best in the world. Thank you so much. We purchase it at Lone Elder Produce in Canby and there is always at least one loaf in our freezer.
Thanks again for your incredible bread as well as your incredible turn around.

The Good Seed Flourless Sprouted Wheat is readily available--along with the rest of the line-up, at most stores as well as at http://www.daveskillerbread.com/

Hi Dave…Just want to take a few minutes of your time to share with you what inspiration your story is.
My son 41 is in the process of a nasty divorce, and because of some violence has spent some time in jail. Today at the 100th birthday in Troutdale I purchased a loaf of bread at the farmers’ market (spotting it at the last minute). We enjoyed it on the way home right out of the bag (not having had lunch), and as I was looking at the nutritional info read your short bio on the wrapper, then reread it aloud to my son who was driving. His short comment was, “And I complained about 7 days in jail.”
The rest of the story is, my son also deals with depression and anger management, and has too felt macho, with the “ I don’t need that stuff” attitude. Until one day, very recently, when after begging him--on bended knees and with a mother’s bleeding heart--to go back on meds, he did. Life comes in stages, we are hard learners, and often don’t get it the first time around. Thanks for sharing your story, I am sure it has made a difference to many on the mend.
We live close and will stop at the store for more good eats.
A mom with a mending heart.

Oh by the way, great bread.

Linda

Hey Linda…thanks for trying the bread. It is very gratifying to know that my story can be inspiring to folks who may need it. Perhaps your son (and yourself) would like to take the time to read my story at

And please do come by and say hello.

Dave

I just ate an entire loaf of Cracked Wheat in one sitting with just Rhubarb jam. It was delicious. I've never had more delicious wheat bread in my life. Thank you for this life-changing bread experience.

Well, at least you got your daily issue of dietary fiber...Dave

Dave, I just recently moved to Eugene from Kentucky. I found your bread at one of the local markets (the Kiva, specifically) and tried it. I am now a loyal Dave's Killer Bread customer. It's amazing. I know you know that you make good bread, and I'm sure lots of people tell you that as well; but I just wanted to add my name to the list. I used to work in a bakery and I love good food, so I know a thing or two about decent bread. The consistency, the flavor, everything about your bread is top notch. A lot of the time, I just toast a piece, add a little butter, and it's on. Mmm, perfect. Your personal story is quite amazing as well. Cheers to you my friend, and thanks for the bread.

Robin

P.S. I come to Portland on occasion, perhaps it might be possible to see where the magic happens some time?

Yes, but let me warn you, you may not find your way out--I haven't!

Dave, I love your bread, and it was really great to read a story about you in Crosscut. I have some health problems that force me to eat pretty strictly (whole grains, no preservatives, etc), and your bread is one of the few that I can eat with no problems. Thanks so much, and keep up your awesome work!

Hello Dave:

I walked in the Race for the Cure yesterday. After the race, someone was handing out Dave's Killer Bread Peace Bombs. My daughter and I shared some of your bread last night and it was great.

More than the product Dave, I appreciate your story. I am a woman in recovery after a long battle with drugs. I first discovered your products at Recovery Rocks/Hands Across the Bridge in 2005. I remember the person at your booth talking about how your bread has good things in it that our bodies need while it recovers from the abuse we put it through.

Today, I have 2 1/2 years clean and am an active participant in life. I get to do things like Walk for the Cure with my teenagers and share good bread with them while talking about how grateful we are for our lives today.

Thanks Dave for supporting Race for the Cure and for being a man who shares about the solution through your story and lives it in our community.

Best regards,
Leanne

Thank you for making this delicious bread. I have reactions to wheat bread. I truly love this bread.

Hi Dave,

I think you know my daughter, Jenn , at the Corvallis "First Alternative" Co-op. She turned me on to your bread and am I glad she did! I have always loved what I call "rocks and sticks" bread and yours is the tastiest, tenderest, and most varied I have ever tasted!

Keep rockin' the loaves man!

Dear Dave,
The long search is over and I have finally found a bread that I can have a relatonship with. One that won't flake out at the first sign of pressure (butter or cream cheese). Plus is FANTASTIC! But the relationship needs to be a long distance one. You see I live in the coast range and do not get to the store that often so either the bread needs to come to me or I need to know about freezing DKB.
Love,
Rachel

Yep, just ask the Eskimos who build their homes with it!

My wife and I first sampled your bread on the bridge during the Portland Bridge Pedal. I think it was you (Dave) actually p[assign out slices on a tray to bike riders. We thought it was the best bread we have tasted. Later, we found that the Hazel Dell Fred Meyer (in Vancouver) sells your bread and have enjoyed tasting the variety of products you produce. Fresh garden tomatoes, turkey bacon, lettuce and Dave’s Good Seed Bread makes the world’s best BLT.

This is just to let you know that your efforts to support the Bridge Pedal and let the riders sample your great bread made us dedicated customers. We look for your breads and recommend them to friends. Awesome work! We wish you much success and many years of happiness.

HELLO!
My sister bought a loaf of bread at the Metropolitan Market in West Seattle and served it at a dinner party a few days ago. All I can say, is OH MY GOD!! This bread is beyond great and even better healthy and delicious!.

I took the empty bag to my local Fred Meyer in Renton and spoke with the bread guy there and seriously requested that he start to carry this bread. I noticed that you are in some Fred Meyer stores in Vancouver Wash so maybe they will.

Please tell me that you are working on perhaps carrying your bread in Whole Foods or Trader Joe;'s or somewhere in Seattle with more stores than Metropolitan market. In the meantime, I asked my sister to please buy me a few loafs of your bread for me. She will have to be supplier until I can find a closer source. haha
In any case, I am now a believer and will continue to pass on the info on this delicious, healthy and great tasting product.

Keep up the good work and thank you! You have indeed found your talent.
God bless you!

Bonnie

Hi there—
I was so thrilled to meet you a few weeks ago at the Beaverton Farmer’s Market. After over a year of swearing by your bread I finally got to meet the man behind it all. I’m a motivational speaker at a hypnosis center (and an aspiring author)—I help people look at their life differently and I’m only able to do it because I had a very full life that forced me to learn certain lessons earlier than most. So I certainly appreciate a good inspiring story when I see one. :-D So thank you for your marvelous bread (since most of my clients are working on weight loss we talk about nutrition a lot and I always bring up your bread) and thank you for your story. I’m reminded of a quote by Marianne Wiliamson who said that “as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give others permission to do the same”. Nelson Mandela used this quote in his inaugural address and it seems to apply here.

So have a wonderful day—it was a pleasure meeting you!
